Software engineer, backend and full-stack

I build the systems other software leans on: APIs, data models, access rules, and the tests that keep them honest.

Bexultan Karimtayev

A yurt stands because every pole leans on one ring.

That ring is the shanyrak, and it sits at the centre of Kazakhstan’s coat of arms. Software has the same part: the layer everything else depends on. That is the part I want to build.

Since 2025 I have worked on backend services, ML pipelines and real-time 3D, in Astana, Singapore, Hong Kong and remotely.

Selected work

The crown closes and each project is stitched onto its cover. The stitches are real counts from that project’s repository.

Personal project, 2026

StudyManager

A semester planner for CityUHK students. They place sections on a weekly timetable, and the backend checks each one for clashes, exclusions, credit load and eligibility, and flags missing prerequisites.

  • REST API in Django and DRF on PostgreSQL, with Supabase Auth and a React 19 client.
  • CI fails on missing migrations and on any drift in the API schema or the client types.

Django, DRF, PostgreSQL, Supabase Auth, React

One stitch per test. Each class on the week is a Django app: courses, schedules, curriculum, users, rules, config.

Placing a course from the grid. Demo data.
Weekly timetable with seven options for one course overlaid: dashed where they fit, red hatching on the two that clash.
Every option previewed on the week, with clashes marked. Demo data.
Course catalogue with a section chooser that explains each clash in a plain sentence.
Clashes explained in plain sentences before you commit. Demo data.

AI email studio

Turns a client’s Shopify store into a brand design system and on-brand email templates, using a multi-agent LLM pipeline.

  • Multi-tenant Node and TypeScript backend on Supabase. Every query is scoped to the brand taken from the caller’s JWT, with row-level security as a second layer.
  • Agent output streams to a React editor over server-sent events, across OpenAI, Anthropic and Gemini.

Node.js, TypeScript, Supabase, React, SSE

One line of the email per API route. The three bright ones stream their responses.

AI email studio

A chat edit to dark mode, then the mobile preview. Scripted demo, no model running.
Studio screen with the chat and its clarifying questions on the left and the email preview on the right.
Sample brand, not a client. The email and its photos were made for this demo.
Design mode with the email’s layer tree, a selected button and its typography settings.

Smart Parking ANPR

Licence-plate recognition for parking barriers, from Hikvision camera to barrier decision, with sessions, tariffs and an admin panel.

  • Fine-tuned an open-source plate OCR model on Kazakh plates, up from a 68.5% baseline, and exported it to ONNX.
  • FastAPI and PostgreSQL service with a React admin panel and a separate recognition service.

Python, FastAPI, PostgreSQL, YOLOv9, ONNX, React

One tile per test plate. The red one is the only miss.

Smart Parking ANPR

The real detector and OCR models, run on rendered cars with made-up plates.
Operator dashboard with the last recognised plate, daily totals, a recognition feed and camera status.

Barrier console showing two gates, relay status, the reason for the last opening and a test-run panel.

Project Maieutic

Two open-source Python packages. traceback-coach teaches students to read their own errors, and hermes-acp-sdk gives Python apps a typed client for the Agent Client Protocol.

Also built

CityU Timetable showing every session of CS1302A on a weekly grid, with a course search above it.
Every session of a course on one week. Live site.

CityU Timetable

A live timetable for CityUHK students. Search any course, see all of its sessions on the week, and pin a timetable with no clashes and no sign-up. Next.js and PostgreSQL, with the schedule read in by a reviewed ingest job.

A name becomes a flower. Recorded on the live site.

Petal Pixel

Type any name and it grows from the soil into its own 3D flower. The same name always grows the same flower, worked out in the browser from the name’s SHA-256. Saved gardens run on a Go gRPC backend with PostgreSQL.

Logisim schematic of the pipelined CPU with its register file, ALU, forwarding units and hazard detection unit.
The whole pipeline in Logisim.

RISC-16

A pipelined 16-bit CPU in Logisim, with forwarding and hazard units and a Python assembler.

Experience

  1. Aug – Oct 2026

    Artificial Intelligence Intern

    Pivot Biomedical Engineering, Hong Kong

Built a PyTorch model that finds systolic and diastolic points in blood-pressure audio. Cut onset error 4× by cleaning noisy labels and shipped a fully in-browser ONNX demo.

  2. Jun – Aug 2026

    Software Developer Intern

    Purands, Singapore

Built the AI email studio above, from the multi-tenant backend to the React editor.

  3. Sep 2025 – Jun 2026

    Software Engineer, Playable Ads

    Playbox, Remote

Engineered 2D and 3D HTML5 games with PixiJS, Three.js and Cocos as single-file builds for ad networks. Reached Senior Creator level.

  4. Jan – May 2026

    Teaching Assistant, CS1302

City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong
